The Cornerian Army is one of the main military forces of Corneria, the purpose being is to patrol and protect the Lylat System from any and all assailants, whose air and ground forces are made up of Cornerians, but mainly Dog Soldiers. Squadrons of this army have been dispatched to various areas of the Lylat System to keep the peace constant. This branch of the military is not to be confused with the Cornerian Defense Force, which deals with threats primarily on Corneria.

General Pepper is commander in chief of all of Corneria's military forces, who have at times been faced by overwhelming enemy numbers, forcing him to summon the elite mercenaries for hire unit, the Star Fox Team, to provide backup support to aid their forces. Cornerian Command is likely the base of the Cornerian Army and planetary politics who presumably act as the Cornerian Army's superiors.

In their early lives, James McCloud, Peppy Hare and Pepper served together in the Cornerian military until James and Peppy moved to form the mercenaries-for-hire Star Fox Team with Pigma Dengar.

In the games[]

StarFox 1993
In the original "Star Fox", the Cornerian Army appear in the opening cinematic cutscene, where they are unable to repel the oncoming invasion from Andross's air force led by the Attack Carrier because Corneria's defense forces were too few in numbers to counterattack the invaders, leaving the commanding officer General Pepper to improvise an emergency plan by loaning four of the experimental, advanced Arwing star fighters to the Star Fox team, as he had no time to train his own pilots. While unseen, the game's manual makes reference to a Cornerian ruling council, who were responsible for Andross's exile after he ignored their many warnings.

In "Star Fox 64", the Cornerian Army mostly repeat their role from the 1993 game. In the opening story of the Main Game, General Pepper exiled the evil mad scientist Andross to Venom for going too far after conducting dangerous experiments that turned Corneria into a wasteland of near extinction. Five years after the exile of Andross, General Pepper noticed strange activity coming from Venom, sending the Star Fox Team to investigate. Pepper's worries were proven true when only Peppy managed to return home after his close escape from Andross's captivity, having been led into it by a trap set up by the traitorous Pigma. Sometime after the incident of Pigma's treason, the Cornerian Army were quickly overpowered by the unexpected invasion of Andross's Empire, and started to lose control over Corneria City, as well as other locations significant to the Cornerian federation's interests, including Sector Y, the Katina Frontline Base, as well as the old military base on Fichina, and only managed to reclaim them after the Star Fox team eventually came to the rescue and took the fight towards the enemy homeworld of Venom, to end the oncoming invasion fleets and defeat the evil mad scientist Andross. Since Corneria's defense forces do not have a tank corps, the Star Fox Team's Landmaster was the only vehicle that could get the jobs done at Macbeth and Titania. Also, because of the rapidly spreading pollution in the ocean planet of Aquas, Cornerian Intelligence was unable to determine exactly what was happening on the planet, so Slippy's Blue-Marine experimental battle submersible was the only craft that descended to the depths and discover what Andross was up to on Aquas.

During the Mission on Katina to save the Cornerian built army base, Star Fox joined up with the esteemed Husky and Bulldog Squadrons to defend the base from the Saucerer. Fox also had a short reunion with his childhood schoolmate Bill Grey, who was a commanding ace pilot in the Cornerian Army.

In gratitude to the successful performances displayed by the Star Fox team in the end of Venom's invasion of Lylat, the crew were saluted by Dog Soldiers, followed by General Pepper even offering the Star Fox team an official commission, but Fox politely refused it, stating that they prefer to do things "their own way".

Although Corneria is unseen in "Adventures", the Lylat System remained under close patrol by the Cornerian forces, until the physical separation of landmass on Planet Sauria came to the immediate attention of the Cornerian federation, giving General Pepper enough reason to send Fox to the planet's surface to investigate the Plight of Sauria, it was learned that Andross was the culprit behind the events, somehow surviving his defeat and was set on returning to destroy the Lylat System, instead of conquest. With assistance from a returned Falco Lombardi, Fox stopped Andross and saved Sauria, earning Star Fox a hefty reward from Pepper.

One year after the incident on Sauria, the Cornerian Army participated in battling a vengeful force comprised of the remaining Venomian forces led by the late Andross's nephew, Andrew Oikonny, over the planet Fortuna. The Cornerian Army at first was able to repel and break up Oikonny's rebelling forces, but Oikonny pushed them back by bringing out his Stealth Squadron. Following the inspirational arrival of the Great Fox, the Cornerian Armada unleashed another volley of cannon fire, bringing devastation to Oikonny's forces, and allowing Star Fox to pursue Oikonny's flagship down into Fortuna. The sudden arrival of the Aparoids brought the battle to an end, where Oikonney Rebels were deemed to be destroyed.

The conflict between the Venomians and Cornerians came to a halt when the Aparoid Invasion took place. It is taken into account from the research director Beltino Toad that around 17 years ago, an entire Cornerian Army fleet was decimated by a sole Aparoid, but the force as a whole was able to survive it.

The Cornerian Army's outpost base that rested on Katina was among the first victims of the Aparoid Invasion. Corneria would later become a victim, losing the majority of the Cornerian Defense Fleet to an Aparoid armada. During the Invasion of Corneria, as the radar jammers started disrupting communications between General Pepper and his commanding officers, General Pepper's personal flagship was attacked and nearly taken over by Aparoidedation. At General Pepper's defiance of the infection, Fox McCloud reluctantly resorted to shooting the flagship down before it could be fully compromised, only for Pepper to be saved in the nick of time by Peppy.

A fleet of surviving Cornerian fighters and cruisers assembled at the Orbital Gate just above Corneria, and helped Star Fox to defend it until an Aparoid self-destruct could be completed. They then followed the Great Fox through the Orbital Gate to the Aparoid Homeworld, and attempted to invade it under the command of Peppy Hare. However, the Aparoids proved to be far too powerful, forcing the Cornerians to retreat at a 20% fleet loss, while Star Fox managed to stay and complete the invasion. The Cornerian forces returned to the Lylat system as soon as any missing ships and personnel were searched out and recovered.

Slippy's father, Beltino Toad plays a major role in the game as the research director of Cornerian military advancement. When Pepper was taken into medical care after his brush with death, Beltino assumed command of Cornerian military action and orchestrated the final stand against the Aparoid Queen and her race, refering to himself and Cornerian Command having done all they can before entrusting everything to Star Fox and the Cornerian fleet when they invaded the Aparoid homeworld.

Star Fox Command logo

Star Fox Command marks a prominent role for the Cornerian Army as several affiliated characters are playable, including Dash, Bill, Krystal, General Peppy and even James McCloud. Following the devastation of the Aparoid Invasion, Corneria and the Lylat System remained in a state of peace, until sometime later, a new terrorist race called the Anglar Empire rose from the seas of Venom after the planet's patrols were postponed to counter the previous invasion. General Pepper grew ill and passed his profession as general of the Cornerian Army over to Peppy Hare by the time of Star Fox Command, in which the lone army must once again attempt to defend Lylat from a rapid invasion of a new powerful threat, the Anglars, although due to the game's branching story path and multiple endings, its true fate is determined by the player.

Dash Bowman is a young pilot for the Cornerian Army, as well as the grandson of Andross and first cousin, once removed of Andrew Oikonny. He thinks very highly of Fox and Falco, and wishes to join the Star Fox team. Even though he looks small and weak he is a highly trained and highly skilled pilot.

Krystal was a member of the Star Fox team who served as the telepath, but was asked to step down between Star Fox: Assault and Star Fox Command. In the later, one route shows that Krystal was allowed to join the Cornerian Army ranks against the Anglar Empire, and she used a Cornerian Fighter.

Star-fox-zero
The Corneria Army reappears in "Zero", mirroring the 1993 and 1997 games, with new additions to their in-game role such where Star Fox are required to protect General Pepper's tower against 10 Hits worth of enemies before Caiman calls a retreat. The Androsa fortress then appears and is set to demolish the tower unless Fox can down it after fighting Granga in the main reactor. Once the Androsa is destroyed, Star Fox depart towards their next mission as General Pepper watches them leave and salutes them for saving him.

In addition to Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy, the Star Fox team numbers were boosted by two members of the Cornerian Army, Fay and Miyu, who were drafted into the Star Fox team to aid the Cornerian Army against the return of Andross.

Other apperances[]

Star Fox Comics[]

The Cornerian Military made appearances in the Nintendo Power comics and the Mission File Printout, based on the original ''"Star Fox"''. More members are included such as General Pepper's Sergeant, who has a bad habit of bursting into a room without knocking. It is also revealed that Andross was the former Cornerian Army's head scientist, who was actually working behind enemy lines to "learn the ways of the enemy", while bearing a grudge towards them for the linked deaths of the Ape's foster parents.

  • Although Dogs make up the majority of soldiers in the Cornerian Army, other species such as Birds, Cats, Bears and even Monkeys appeared as pilots.

Lylat Wars Comic[]

The Cornerian Army make an appearance in the last page of the Lylat Wars Comic. Dog Soldiers salute the Star Fox Team like they do in the game, while General Pepper offers to make Fox the Cornerian Minister of Defense. Fox declines believing that they work better as a small quick group than an army. They announce that they need to get back to work and that Katt is waiting for Falco, but Fox promises that the Cornerian Army can always count on them.

Farewell; Beloved Falco[]

Following Andross and his army's original defeats, the Cornerian Army had no need to contract Star Fox into action for some time.  Around four years after the Lylat Wars, one high ranking officer in the Cornerian Army who resembled General Pepper named Captain Shears led a research expedition to a newly established base on Titania, to study ancient records. The ragtag team of space runaways intercepted transmissions from Shears's forces, leading to their identities as survivors of the Venomian army, attempting to revive the fallen Ape Emperor Andross. At the cost of Falco Lombardi's position on the Star Fox team, the traitorous Shears and his unit were exposed and neutralized by Fox and the Hot Rodders, destroying the base and burying the Andross clone with it. After losing a duel with Fox, he was presumably crushed by the Andross clone he created.

Trivia[]

  • Sunglasses seem to be a common fashion in the Cornerian Army as they are worn by several of the above characters including General Pepper, Bill, Krystal and Captain Shears. James McCloud who once served in the Cornerian Army is famous for having almost never been seen without his sunglasses. However, in Krystal's case it's blue tint indicate it is more of a visor, of the type used by fighter pilots in the real world, likely going the same for Bill as both wear flight helmets.
