Characteristics

Peppy Hare has appeared in every instance of Star Fox in media, including everyone of the main games, spin-off games, comics and the "Zero" anime. This has given him a lot of focus and character development.

Physical appearance[]

Although Peppy's last name would suggest that he is a hare, he is actually a rabbit. He has long ears, large incisors, and a country accent that seems to mellow out in each game as he gets older. In all games, he wears a long trench coat with a long collar, with inner-clothing similar to Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad's except that it is red in color. In later games, he grows a white mustache. Peppy's original character artwork had brown fur in the original "Star Fox" as well as the Nintendo Power comics, but not in the actual video game. From "Star Fox 64" to "Star Fox 64 3D", Peppy is grey furred. His brown fur returns as of "Zero", likely as a reference to his original, realistic character artwork.

Characteristics[]

SFA Peppy ROB Command

Peppy orders all ships to be launched.

Peppy's character throughout the games and spin-off media is traditionally an advisor, making useful hints and tips for Fox to follow. In all of the games and spin-off media, Peppy is considered a father figure to Fox and the rest of the team, probably considering that Peppy did not have a son of his own. This is due to having been lifelong friends with James McCloud and having watched Fox grow from a young pup to an experienced pilot. Also, his daughter Lucy Hare revealed that he sees Krystal as a "second daughter". The "Peppy" part of his full name may come from his "peppy" behavior in "Star Fox 64", but this is contradicted in the later games, as he gets older and slower.

Even though Peppy declined the position of Star Fox's leader and insited that Fox should take the title, he still gives commanding advice to which other characters respond likely to due to his seniority. In his senior age Peppy appears to have a gentle nagging side and has no approval for tomfoolery, evident when Slippy breaks formation or gets into trouble, or when Falco exceeds his speed. Since his retirement from active duty in Adventures, Peppy still retained his wise, senior demaner but apparently gainsed a sense of absent-mindedness from getting more older and even falling asleep on the game's main menu until woken up by the player's selection.

SFA Peppy Bridge Warning

Peppy on the bridge, about to explode.

In Assault, Peppy had taken a more secondary command position to go hand in hand with his advisory role, whilst making instructions and directing orders to the active team. Stages in the game also witness a more reckless side to Peppy, evidently when flying an Arwing out of the blue to rescue his old friend, General Pepper from a fatal crash at his own expense, and again when flying the Great Fox into the powerful shield at the potential cost of his own life.

In the crossover of Starlink:Battle for Atlas, it's revealed that Peppy wants to focus on the main task ahead of him and ingore other sub-missions, this is shown whem the team traveled to the Atlas Star System to track down Wolf, only to see the Equinox's pilots in need of assistance to fight off the members of The Forgotten Legion, Fox wants to help them out, but Peppy refuses to do so and just wants to take down Wolf. Fox, Falco and Slippy take off to help them while Peppy wished that he retired back on Corneria earlier, then he reluctantly follows the trio.

Relationships[]

James McCloud[]

Peppy and James were always the very best of friends, ever since their days in the Cornerian Army, thanks to their strong sense of justice and responsibility. It has been implied that Peppy's escape from Venom was in thanks to James creating a diversion for him, which Peppy clearly dedicates himself to repaying by managing to keep up the mercenary business he and James started, and also keeping close to Fox.

Fox McCloud[]

Of all the Star Fox Team members, Peppy has mostly bonded with Fox, even before he became the team leader. Knowing Fox all of his life, watching him grow from a pup into an esteemed leader has given Peppy significant interest in his career. Apparently as a final wish from James, it was Peppy who insisted that Fox should be the one to lead the team. Fox has also kept up his true friendship with Peppy, caring deeply for him. In "Assault", Fox found it difficult to the point of grief when having to watch Peppy being attacked by Aparoids and making his suicidal move to clear the way into the planet for the team, but Fox was grateful enough to respect Peppy's wishes to move on and not let his brave sacrifice go to waste. Fox was however smart enough to suspect that Peppy would make it out of the explosion in the nick of time.

Slippy Toad[]

While Slippy's optimism and clumsiness is tolerated more-or-less by Fox, Peppy has usually shown little patience and often lets Slippy know about it, such as when Slippy breaks formation in "Star Fox 64", and nagging at him for lazying around and leaving the Great Fox's bridge in an eyesore state in the "Zero" anime. Regardless of their age difference and opposite seriousness, Slippy and Peppy have remained positive teammates and friends on and off the battlefield. Slippy was the most distressed over Peppy's apparent sacrifice, busting into tears at having to leave him behind, but was overcome with joy to see him alive at the end of the Aparoid Race defeat.

Falco Lombardi[]

Despite Falco's more brash and overly confident outlook contrasting with Peppy's more grounded and serious nature, the two have managed to get along fine. Although Falco won't admit it, but he considers the Star Fox Team to be his own family, evidently when referring to Peppy as "gramps", and still respectfully cooperating with him, and also pleading for the "crazy old fool" not to throw his life away when spearheading the Great Fox into the Aparoid Homeworld's shield.

Pigma Dengar[]

When Peppy was teammates with Pigma, he respected Dengar's brilliant cleverness allowing him to stay ahead of the curve. But after Pigma abandoned the Star Fox Team and sold his teammates out to Andross, Peppy has rightly so had a grudge for Pigma's treason, hinted at in the opening demo of "Zero", where Peppy's Landmster has a pinup sentimental photograph of him with James and General Pepper, which appears to be torn at the corner, suggesting Pigma would have also been in the picture if not for his betrayal.

Andross[]

In "Star Fox 64", having been a prisoner of Andross, Peppy was no fan of his evil ways and dedicated himself to helping Fox achieve victory over the evil mad scientist. Having seen them first hand and experiencing their cruelty, Peppy learned a great deal about the ways of the Androssian Empire and how they operate, since he once had to escape from the planet Venom, enabling him great foreknowledge essential to winning the war. In "Command", when defeating the bioweapon on Titania, Peppy admits to having been afraid of Andross, which is understandable for the dictator ape being responsible for his captivity and the unconfirmed, but presumed death of his best friend James.

Abilities[]

Pilot Skils[]

Papetoon

Peppy escapes even successfully flying a beaten up Arwing.

Being rated as an SP 1st Class, and due to his years in the Cornerian Army and as the senior Star Fox Team advisor, Peppy is beyond competent enough behind the controls of an Arwing and Landmaster.

  • Arwing: As the Arwing is the primary fighting machine of the Star Fox Team, Peppy is frequently behind the controls of one in the games. As shown in the intro of "Star Fox 64", Peppy was able to successful at escaping from Venom, even when flying a beaten up, but still working Arwing on his own. Even when retired form active flight duty in "Assault", Peppy was still highly capable of piloting an Arwing to fly at full velocity into Corneria City and save General Pepper's life, even making the correct calculation to precisely angle his cockpit to prevent the General's downed flagship from hitting the ground.
  • Landmaster: Peppy has shown himself to be a competent driver of a Landmaster, as shown in the intro of "Zero". In the Versus Mode of "Assault", Peppy's Landmaster skill is third best, behind Fox and Slippy, and better than those of Falco, Krystal and Wolf.

Combat Skills[]

Because of his military years, Peppy is capable of ground based combat, and is very knowledgable at using the many weapons at Fox's disposal. In the Versus Mode of "Assault", Peppy's Pilot skill is equal with that of Fox's, giving him an equal aiming sight, for making better shots. Being a rabbit, Peppy can make a much better jump than any other character in Versus Mode, and can charge his Blaster at a rate x4 quicker than the others.

Tactician[]

Being the Star Fox Team's advisor, Peppy has excellent tactical decisions and always knowns the best way to deal with any dangerous bosses, from finding the correct weak spot to making the proper flight techniques. His many years of flying have made him knowledgable about the entire Lylat System and the inhabitants. Peppy has shown a terrific way of finding the right flight paths around the Lylat System, evidently when knowing the right flight routes in "Star Fox 64". And when becoming Fox's navigator in "Adventures", when selecting Peppy on the Communicator, he can indicate the next destination to head for and also provide hints what to search for the the areas.
