As the Star Fox team's main ground based vehicle, the Landmaster appears as a playable vehicle in three games and in spin-off media.

Fox battles Goras using the Landmaster.

The Landmaster appears in Star Fox 64. Its controls are, for the most part, much like the Arwing. However, the tank turns a little slower. Jets on the bottom of the tank allow it to turn quickly and barrel roll, and if both jets are fired the tank can hover upwards. The Landmaster design was very basic; it had a single cannon capable of shooting several laser-balls per second or Smart Bombs. It also had two traditional tank treads. The camera angle could not be changed. It had limited flying capability with its jump jets. In this game, the Landmaster did not create a deflection shield when barrel rolling. Instead, the Landmaster's barrel roll was used merely for dodging enemy laser fire and other weapons.

Official Site description

The Landmaster tank was originally being developed by Space Dynamics Co., Ltd. as an armored exploration vehicle. However, when the Star Fox Team required a land based combat vehicle, it was converted by adding stronger battle armor and weapons systems. The only prototype is now part of the Star Fox Team's arsenal. Although primarily a ground based assault weapon, the Landmaster can also hover for a short time, and can roll from side to side to help it avoid land mines and enemy attacks.

Star Fox Assault

A Landmaster in Star Fox: Assault.

In Star Fox: Assault, the Landmaster's appearance improved greatly: The design looks more complex and the turret can now swivel in more directions which makes it more effective. It now has four all-terrain wheels instead of traditional tank treads, which decreases traction but increases mobility, and its barrel roll technique now creates a deflection shield around the vehicle. Unfortunately, it can no longer uses Nova Bombs, has a much slower rate of fire (though the projectiles are significantly more powerful), and has lighter armor. It also has been modified to be an anti-aircraft vehicle. Slippy is an expert at controlling the Landmaster.

Instruction Manual description

This new and improved version of the Landmaster is lighter than before and maintains its all-terrian exploration wheels on a combat-ready tank chassis. Small plasma engines located on either side of the chassis give the Landmaster hovering capabilities for short durations of time.

The Landmaster's status can now be viewed on the lower screen.

SFZ Gravmaster

The new Gravmaster (a play on Gravity and Landmaster).

The Landmaster returns in Star Fox Zero, in a style resembling it's Star Fox 64 3D design, albeit with a pair of missile launchers added to it. Since the Arwing can now transform into a Walker (similar to the Walker), the Landmaster can now transform into a heavy jet known as the Gravmaster, looking similar to the Landmaster model in Star Fox 64. The Gravmaster mode allows the Landmaster to fly, but depletes boost energy while active and automatically changes back when the boost gauge is empty. Additionally, it is slower than the Arwing and cannot perform barrel rolls, U-turn, or somersaults.

In the place of a charge shot, the Landmaster can fire up to three homing missiles in either of its forms, allowing it to devastate multiple enemy clusters at once.

Primarily a ground based assault weapon, the Landmaster can also hover for a short time, and can roll from side to side to help avoid enemy attacks.

Height: 8.5 sm

Length: 24 sm

Top Speed: up to 97 skm/hr (during boost)

Weapons: Laser, missiles, smart bomb

The Landmaster can transform into the Gravmaster, a heavy jet that improves mobility and can rain down targeting missiles from above.

Versus Mode

In Star Fox 64 and Star Fox: Assault, the Landmaster is available in Versus Mode. These are the only times that the Landmaster can collect Laser Upgrades. In Star Fox 64, the lasers will upgrade to twin and hyper spiraling shots, while in Assault, the laser fire will become faster.

Landmaster tanks have recently appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl onwards as Final Smashes for FoxFalco, and Wolf. However, the CPU-controlled Fox, Falco, and Wolf have a tendency to drive the Landmaster off-screen. The tank's appearance is a cross between its Star Fox 64 look and its Star Fox Assault look. It maintains the sharp and futuristic appearance it had in Assault, but still has the traditional tank treads from 64. All of them except for Wolf's are modified by Slippy. The previous model appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy.

Team Star Fox's high-powered, anti-aircraft hover tank. Its caterpillar-like treads allow it to perform quick lateral rolls. It can even fly for short periods of time. Its main cannons closely resemble the weapons technology on an Arwing, so the same rules apply: if you charge them up, you can shoot guided missiles.

Fox's Landmaster

Fox's Landmaster.

Fox's Landmaster is the most balanced of the three. Its laser has moderate power, and it has decent hovering capabilities. Its roll is the second most powerful, but its turn and movement speed is fairly slow.

Falco's variant of the Landmaster is nearly identical to Fox's, but its attributes are more personalized to his criteria. It has better turning and movement speed and hovering capabilities, although its rolling and laser power are slightly weaker than Fox's.

Wolf Landmaster

Wolf's Landmaster: The strongest of the three, but lasts the shortest.

Wolf's Landmaster has the same appearance of Fox and Falco's, only sporting the red color of his Wolfen and the notable absence of the Star Fox emblem on the side panel. Wolf stole the schematics for Fox's Landmaster and made a more upgraded version. It surpasses Fox and Falco's in all statistics except for handling and fuel. His final smash lasts 6 seconds less than Fox/Falco's Landmasters.

He's increased the output of the onboard generators and upped the vehicles firepower. However, this has substantially decreased the time the Landmaster can appear on the screen. It sports the same colors as Wolf's Wolfen.
