Annoying bird! I am the great Leon!
97 Leon

Leon Powalski is a member of the Star Wolf team of space pirates, serving as the group's specialist in assassination, and is the only member other than Wolf O'Donnell himself that has been on the team since Wolf formed the notorious group. Contrary to his desire to express a reputable greatness, very little is known about who Leon was before his perpetual placement on the Star Wolf team of wanted criminals, other than his personal motivation for inflicting pain and suffering for cash. He also has an equally perpetual rivalry against Falco Lombardi, the ace member of the Star Fox team.

Biography[]

Much of Leon's past is unknown, but he was known to be motivated by pain and suffering, as well as money, and most likely had some past rivalry with Falco Lombardi, whom he mainly concentrates on during dogfights. When Star Wolf was initially formed as a group of elite evil pilots to defend the key routes to Venom after being funded and equipped by Andross, Wolf teamed up with Pigma Dengar, Andross's nephew, Andrew Oikonny, and found the mysterious Leon Powalski in a rough bar on Venom, where Leon was hired because of his delight in torturing opponents before destroying them.

Fichina[]

Leon, upon Star Wolf's arrival shortly after Fox discovered that a fleet of Androssians set up a bomb inside the Fichina Outpost, revealed that Andross sent them to kill the Star Fox team. Leon focused on fighting Falco, and expresses irritation toward the bird, declaring that he is the "Great Leon". When he was shot down, he was in disbelief that such a thing could happen to him.

Bolse[]

Star Wolf was ordered to stop Star Fox from destroying Bolse. Leon, upon arrival, reveals his love of torture, as he deeply considers torturing the Star Fox team for a while. He continued to focus on Falco until he was shot down.

Venom[]

In the Cornerian invasion of Venom, Star Wolf was ordered to protect Andross's palace. Leon suffered damage to his right eye, and has to wear a bionic eye until it heals. Upon arrival, he wonders whether the Star Fox team will be able to handle their new Wolfen IIs. He expressed shock at Fox's skill when he was shot down.

Like the others, Leon survived, and apparently recovered from all his injuries.

Leon reappeared during the Aparoid Invasion, serving the same role he had in the Lylat Wars and likewise was the only original Star Wolf member on Star Wolf besides Wolf himself. His rivalry with Falco seems to have grown more tense, as the two make snide remarks about each other (even while Star Wolf is helping Star Fox defeat the Aparoids). It is revealed that Leon specializes in killing, as he is called an "assassin" in the instruction booklet and a "killer" in official artwork. Leon also appears to show sympathy for other reptilian or amphibious creatures (like Slippy). Panther first met the Star Fox team in battle, following the conclusion of their mission to take control of the Sargasso Space Zone hideout. Despite his hostile attitude towards the rest of the Star Fox team, he was overwhelmed by Krystal's beauty, causing him to reveal that the com record indicated that Pigma has fled to Fichina.

Leon disappeared with the rest of his team for some time until the Aparoid devastation of Corneria. His rivalry with Falco was still persistent due to the bickering between them nearly leading to a scrap between them.

Leon and Star Wolf reappeared after Corneria City's annihilation to continue supporting the Cornerians in their common struggle against the Aparoids, by assisting shooting down Aparoid missiles that threatened to destroy the Orbital Gate whilst the Self-destruct program was being built by Corneria's federation scientists. Leon managed to take care of missiles with ease but expressed boredom due to how easy it was for him.

Once the Star Fox team made it past the Homeworld's defensive shield at the cost of Peppy, ROB and the Great Fox, the Wolfen trio arrived yet again to aid the Arwings through the tunnels to reach the Aparoid Queen. Leon still could not resist the delight in tormenting Falco and flew close enough to irritate him as an act of trying to find any weak points. Leon and his team vanished after luring the powerful Silver Aparoids away from the Arwings, leaving their fates ambiguous with the destruction of the Aparoid Homeworld, although Fox remained positive that Wolf's team would live to fight another day.

Having survived the destruction of the Aparoid Homeworld, Leon was still a loyal member to Star Wolf and piloted his own ship, the Rainbow Delta, customised from a Wolfen. Leon, along with the other members had returned to taking more evil turns, as they were still wanted across the galaxy for illegal activities. Even though Leon is the "assassin" of the group, his bounty is at the lowest, being wanted for only S$10,000. Also, despite being wanted for piracy, Leon apparently grew tired of being hated and feared, hoping to clear his negative image and earning recognition and friendship for defeating the Anglars.

Trivia[]

  • His name could be a reference to Leon Kowalski, a character in the 1982 film Blade Runner.
  • In Star Fox 64, the quote "Annoying bird! I am the great Leon!" has been made into a popular internet meme, like many other character lines from this game.
  • Following the above note, in Star Fox Assault, Leon's opening statement is "Ha ha! I think I'll torment you a bit before I cook you!" which resembles his opening statement, "I think I'll torture you for a while!" when fighting Star Wolf on Bolse in Star Fox 64.
  • Leon is the only Star Wolf member in Star Fox Zero who does not have a secret battle, thus his personal sub-weapon remains unknown.
  • In Star Fox 64, Leon has a smooth gentleman-like demeanor. However, in Star Fox Assault, his personality became more wild and unpredictable. This aforementioned behavior can even be seen in Star Fox 2.
  • Leon's trophy description in Super Smash Bros. For 3DS/Wii U describes him as "Star Wolf's resident sniper." The description also claims that Leon favors a sniper rifle, despite him never being seen wielding one in any Star Fox game.
  • In the description for the Star Wolf team in Starlink: Battle for Atlas, it states the Leon comes from Venom.
