Peppy's debut in the Star Fox series was marked in Star Fox. His famous advisory role began here as well, as he gave advice on how to perform certain maneuvers. In contrast to later games, he has no established connection to Fox's father or given any seniority traits which were introduced later.

Instruction booklet description

Peppy is the moderating force on the Star Fox team. His gentle character and wealth of knowledge make him an invaluable balance to the chaotic chemistry of the other Star Fox Team members. His skill as a pilot is an added plus.

In Star Fox 64, Peppy served the same role he did in Star Fox; as an adviser. As long he is present on the battlefield, Peppy will shout out useful pilot techniques, surrounding warnings and how to defeat the Androssian lieutenants. Evidently, Peppy was a member of the previous generation Star Fox team, alongside Pigma and James McCloud. This game spawned his famous "Do a Barrel Roll!" quote, among others. Peppy and Pigma target each other in the occasional dogfights between Star Fox and Star Wolf, due to Pigma's treason against his old team and the two appear to have formed an arch rivalry since then, referring to doing in his "old pal". Peppy also compares Fox's piloting skills in the game to that of his father's, making comments such as "Your father helped me like that too" and the like. Peppy's base color in this game is red.

Peppy is also a playable character in Versus Mode via the Nintendo 64 controller in the second socket.

Official Star Fox 64 Site descriptions

A long time friend of Fox's father, Peppy Hare is the senior member of the Star Fox Team. An experienced pilot, he has learned many tricks in his years of flying, and is also very knowledgeable about Andross's forces, since he once had to escape captivity at their hands. Even though Peppy is older than all the other Star Fox Team members, he declined the leadership role and insisted that the younger Fox McCloud take over the team after Fox's father, James McCloud, was slain by Andross.

Peppy is appears again in Star Fox Adventures. He has retired from flying and now resides in the Great Fox, giving Fox advice whenever he is flying and helping with navigation while Fox is on land. When contacting Peppy on the communicator, he will upload a world map for viewing directing, since he spends his time studying ancient records on Dinosaur Planet and translates directions on Fox's P.D.A scanner map after Fox buys the maps in the ThornTail Store, but will advise Fox to contact Slippy for advice if the work within the current position is done yet.

Star Fox: Assault marks another major role for Peppy. He has fully retired as a pilot and still gives advice from the safety of the Great Fox, alongside ROB 64, which includes instructions on how to maneuver the Arwing and Landmaster, directions for Pilot based missions, and how to avoid enemy attacks. Peppy climbs into an Arwing on Corneria and risks his life to save General Pepper when Pepper's flagship was infected by Aparoidedation. Near the end, it was believed by the team that Peppy had died when he risked his life a second time and crashed the mothership into the barrier blocking the pathway into the core of the Aparoid Homeworld, but he survived and had escaped using one of the ship's escape pods, then promising that he's really going to retire after.

Multiplayer

Peppy is an unlockable playable character in Assault's Versus Mode. To unlock him, 15 VS. Mode matches have to be played. He has the best pilot skill in the game (tied with Fox's), the slowest running speed, the best jump. His Arwing and Landmaster skills are average. Peppy has the second lowest health stat. Like Slippy, his blaster charges faster than normal, but his blaster is 4x as fast instead of simply twice as fast.

Peppy is pretty difficult to play. His survivability is is low due to his low health and speed. His exceptionally high blaster charging speed lets him hold his ground pretty well in a defensive position. Peppy's outstanding jumping skill makes him very useful when standing behind cover, quickly charging his blaster, jumping and firing the maxed-out blaster shot. Using an Arwing or Landmaster is also an option for Peppy.

Peppy in Command as General of the Cornerian Army.

Peppy has appeared in Star Fox Command. He is now General of the Cornerian Army, taking the now ill Pepper's place. Peppy's role is now both advisory and similar to that of Pepper's from the previous games. In the end, after the Anglars fall, Peppy helps with organizing a "Welcome Home" party with Krystal, Katt, Lucy (his daughter), and Amanda. Peppy and Lucy eventually slip away to reminisce about Vivian, Peppy's now deceased wife and Lucy's mother. They bring up memories both joyful and bittersweet, continuing their conversation until sunrise.

Peppy Hare

Whenever Peppy is a selectable pilot for gameplay, he will fly an Arwing identical to the ones used in the Aparoid Invasion era, while the background music plays a rendition of the "Hit the Planet" cutscene in Assault.

Peppy on the Communications Channel in Star Fox Zero.

Peppy returns in Star Fox Zero, still giving advice and gameplay hints like before. Peppy appears in the opening cinema where James apparently sacrificed himself in order to let Peppy make an escape, evident when Peppy's critically damaged Arwing escapes laser from from several Harlock-class Frigates. He is the focal point of the mission on Titania where his Arwing has crashed into a sandpit and become a captive of the Scrapworm, identical to when Slippy was a captive of Goras in Star Fox 64. He is also the playable character in the Salvadora secret level where it's revealed that he managed to recover on his own and single-handedly takes on the heavily armed battleship. Performing the Barrel Roll will cause him to shout "Barrel Roll" every time. In the trailer, Peppy is seen driving a Landmaster, where the cockpit has a photograph of himself and his army comrades and friends, James and Pepper, but the photograph appears to be torn off in the right corner which is likely where Pigma would have been had it not been for his treason.

Peppy appears in Star Fox 2 as one of six playable characters (the four males plus females Miyu and Fay). The game was originally scrapped in mid-1995 to make way for the then-upcoming Nintendo 64, and ROMs of the game in sundry stages of development were later leaked on the Internet. However, the final version of the game will be pre-installed on the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017.

Peppy makes a cameo appearance in Melee. He makes quotes during the game's Star Fox portion of the Adventure mode, alongside Slippy and Falco (who is a playable character). He can also appear if the player (as either Fox or Falco) performs a secret taunt on the Corneria or Venom stages. One can do this secret taunt by alternatively tapping the left and right buttons on the GameCube Controller's control pad. Peppy is also in the game as a collectible trophy.
