Supply Rings, Shield Rings and Supply Stars are important and popular items in the Star Fox series. They recover the damage taken by an Arwing, Landmaster or other vehicle, which is the main method of filling the Shield Gauge. Supply Rings were originally described as "checkpoint rings." Each type of Ring makes a special sound when obtained which may differ from game to game. Their names also differ from game to game.

Small Energy Supply[]

“This small ring will appear after you have destroyed certain enemies or missiles. When you fly through it, some of your shield energy will be replenished.”

Star Fox 64/3D[]

In Star Fox 64/3D, Supply Rings (silver) could be found by destroying enemies or obstacles. Shield Rings (golden) are much more rare and are held by specific enemies or places at certain points on a stage; collecting three of them will double the vehicle's shield capacity for the remainder of the stage, and every three collected after that will grant an extra life. Gold Rings will also be carried over to the next mission or at the beginning of a restarted one. Middle Supplies (also known as Supply Stars[1]) can only be found in several places throughout the game, such as in rocks on Solar or from defeating a member of Star Wolf team on Venom, and may also be found inside Containers if the vehicle's shield is extremely low; Middle Supplies completely restore the vehicle's shields when picked up. The Middle Supplies appear exclusively in Star Fox 64. Actual Checkpoint Rings will both replenish the vehicle's shields and enable a restart point if it is shot down, providing the level has one at all.

Star Fox Adventures[]

In Star Fox Adventures Supply Rings are referred to as just Silver- and Gold Rings. While Fox McCloud is traveling between the different regions of Sauria in his Arwing, he is required to fly through a particular number of Gold Rings to open the force field surrounding the region. These rings are in fact Supply Rings. The silver ones appear in their original health recovery purpose too. Additionally, Star Fox Adventures introduced Moving Rings, Gold X Rings and Moving X Rings. The Moving Rings move across the screen either vertically or horizontally, and the X Rings are blocked by a small X, which must be shot in order to make the ring accessible. These ring types are yet to appear in any other Star Fox game.

Star Fox: Assault[]

In Star Fox: Assault, Supply Rings are called Silver- and Gold Shield Rings, but their function remains the same. Slippy Toad and Krystal will drop behind Silver Supply Rings for Fox as gratitude if he manages to save them on time from tailing enemies.

Star Fox Command[]

There is another variant of the Supply Ring in Star Fox Command. Their appearance has been changed drastically and are only yellow triangles forming a circle. While in the middle of a conflict, a Supply Ring will restore two bars of the ship's shield, but in multiplayer mode or on the map screen, an obtained Supply Ring will fully restore the shield.

Star Fox Zero[]

Star Fox Zero retains the original three Ring types while adding a new one called Super Gold Ring, which appear similar to the Gold Rings with a slightly darker coloration and a ribbon in the center. Collecting all three in a mission will create a collectable Medal to obtain, usually formed in front of the player.

Trivia[]

  • The golden Supply Rings somewhat resemble the golden rings from the Sonic the Hedgehog series; coincidentally, the rings in the Sonic series also serve as a means of defense, in that they protect the player from enemy damage (and in some titles, replenish the player's health gauge, much like in the Star Fox series).
  • The golden supply ring was intended to make a cameo in Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga as an item that Fox McCloud supplies the Mario Bros. after brewing coffee during the Starbeans sidequest. However, it was repurposed into the Bonus Ring after Fox's cameo ended up cut.
