[edit] Biography

Fox and Wolf were enemies sometime before Star Fox 64 took place. It is heavily implied that they have a long and bitter history with each other, despite mutual respect. It has been suggested in the comic adaptation of Star Fox 64, as well as his statement when he is getting the upper hand of a Dogfight against Fox in the game itself ("You'll be seeing your dad soon, Fox!") that Wolf was involved with the apparent death of James McCloud- Fox's father (further hinted by his Brawl trophy). When Wolf's team was hired by Andross to take down Star Fox, Wolf wanted nothing but to fulfill his orders and to kill Fox. Star Wolf team ultimately failed their mission, leading Wolf to seek revenge for his own personal reasons.

Since Star Fox 64, his character has changed from being reminiscent of a stereotypical classy and sinister English narcissist to that of a stereotypical crude American pirate. This may symbolize the fact that he has become less villainous since Star Fox 64.

Years later, in Star Fox: Assault, Wolf planned on taking down the Star Fox team once more, but the invasion of the Aparoids allowed Wolf to put his personal vendetta aside for the time being and work with Fox for the common good. When Fox was ambushed by Aparoids on top of the Persimmon's Building in Corneria City, Wolf flew in to his rescue. However, he denies actually saving Fox, claiming he just jumped onto his Wolfen's wing at the right time, and he then claims that even if he did save indeed save Fox, the only reason he did so was to kill Fox off himself later (Though Panther and Leon's statements imply that he may not have been serious about that). It was at this point that Wolf told Fox "Don't hesitate. When the time comes, just act," which got Fox through some later internal struggles. Wolf's initial pure villainy has greatly subsided since Star Fox 64 as some stories in Star Fox Command feature him and his team helping Star Fox, and the Pilot Gallery in Command states that he feels a grudging respect towards Fox (although this was actually implied in the originally Japanese version rather than outright said), with him also expressing guilt after beating the Star Wolf Returns final mission, due to him cheating the Star Fox Team out of the victory. Despite this, he maintains his rivalry with and the dislike of the Star Fox Team and Fox in particular. Though afflicted in these events, Wolf's alignment in the series is Neutral; meaning he can help out Fox or betray him. Wolf and his team were thought to be killed in the explosion of the Aparoid Homeworld in Assault, but were revealed to have survived in Command, with a bounty on their heads sometime later. Several things happen depending on the route, Fox even hires Wolf to help him in one story. His ship is the only one in his team which keeps the original Wolfen (ウルフェン) design, but it is called the Red Fang in the North American instruction manual (the game itself does not change the ship's name).

[edit] In Super Smash Bros.

Wolf's cameo in Melee

Wolf makes a minor cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee in the introduction sequence, where he is briefly shown fighting Fox from his Wolfen. He, although not positively, is seen in the Corneria Level as one of the Wolfens that fly down and shoot the lasers. Leon from the F-Zero game series looks notably similar to Wolf, but shares his name with Leon Powalski. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, one of Wolf's alternate colors make him resemble Leon, from the suit color to fur.

[edit] In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Wolf as he appears in Brawl. His apperance here is with a design that is exclusive to Brawl.

Wolf has recently appeared as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He's unlocked by skipping a door in the ruins level in the Subspace Emissary, beating Boss Battles mode with Fox or Falco, or by getting 450 vs. Matches. Interestingly, his trophy states that his rivalry with Fox actually started with Fox's Father, James. Unlike most of the characters in Brawl, he does not have much of a role in the Subspace Emissary.

[edit] Special Moves

  • Standard- Blaster: Much unlike Fox's and Falco's, Wolf's blaster has a lower rate of fire, its shots move slower and have limited range, but can cause more damage. It also features a bayonet that can cause extra damage at close range when he whips it out.
  • Side- Wolf Flash: Again, it is not like the latter two characters. Wolf will travel in a diagonal direction and it won't go so far. If Wolf collides with another character at the very apex of the launch, said character will take heavy damage and suffer a meteor strike (plummeting downwards).
  • Up- Fire Wolf: For this attack, Wolf will launch himself in the desired direction. Anyone caught in the attack will be stuck in a combo until the attack is finished.
  • Down- Reflector: Similar to Fox's, except it is magenta, it protects Wolf on his sides not above or below, and it is generated from the energy reactor on his back. It also reflects projectiles back at double the speed and power.
  • Final Smash- Landmaster: According to his Final Smash trophy, Wolf analyzed Fox's Landmaster and built his own improved version, featuring a Red and Black color scheme, similar to the color of his Wolfen. It outmatches Fox's and Falco's in all categories except for traction and fuel supply. Because of the fuel shortage, Wolf can only remain in the Landmaster for roughly 10 seconds, unlike Fox and Falco who can remain in their respective vehicles for 18 seconds.

[edit] Trophy Info

"A pilot whose real name is Wolf O'Donnell. He leads a group of mercenaries called Star Wolf. He's crossed paths with Fox many times, and each acknowledges the other as a competent rival. Wolf's constant interference with Fox is a result of Wolf's history with Fox's dad, James. Wolf's long history of criminal enterprise has resulted in a large bounty on his head."

[edit] Voice And Personality

Wolf was intially portayed as sly and cunning. However, from Star Fox Assault to present, Wolf's personality is that of a typical thug. He respects Fox but still scorns him as well. He also appears to despise the rest of Fox's team, which consists of Krystal, Falco Lombardi, and Slippy Toad. Wolf also likely hates all authority figures like General Pepper, as well as any royalty and/or nobility. He appears to have been rivals with James McCloud as well, as Wolf made snide remarks regarding James in Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault. Overall, Wolf is a sadistic and cruel person who possesses cold indifferance, considered fitting as he is a thug and a crime lord, and his personality was changed to that of a space pirate. Despite his good intentions in the Apariod and Angular war, Wolf has not stopped his crimes. His facial expression is always either a sinister grin or a stern frown.

Wolf intially spoke in a sneaky tone of voice with a British English accent. From Star Fox Assault to present, Wolf now has a deep voice.

[edit] Appearance

Wolf has only a central portion of white hair on his head; the rest being buzzed off. Wolf`s pointy gray ears rise above his head. His one visible eye is purple, and Wolf always seems to have an enraged look in his eye. This is intensified by his usually glaring white eyebrows. Wolf is also of tall height, being a little bigger than Fox, Falco, Krystal, and other characters. Hidden under his white muzzle are his sharp white fangs. Wolf has a rough gray tail which has a split at the tip. His body fur is gray and white. Wolf is very muscular.

[edit] Clothing

In Star Fox 64, the only visible clothing Wolf is wearing, due to him only appearing via mugshots, is a black eye patch, a red scarf, and what seems to be a brown overcoat.

In Star Fox Assault, Wolf wears a bulky and heavily armored black leather flight suit, big and heavy black leather combat boots, an armored gray flak jacket, armored black leather gauntlets, a metal utility belt, connected spiked black shoulder pads, black metal knee pads, and a machine-like eye patch.

In Star Fox Command, Wolf wears the same outfit he wore in Star Fox Assault showing that it's his normal outfit.

In Super Smash Bros Brawl, Wolf wears a black A-shirt, black leather trousers, spiked and armored black boots, a blue ballistic vest, seperate spiked shoulder pads, spiked knee pads, fingerless black gloves, a belt with a wolf-shaped buckle and an attached chain, a locket, a studded black collar, a booster on his back, and still wears his machine-like eye patch.

[edit] Miscellaneous

He is voiced by Hisao Egawa in the Japanese version of Star Fox 64 and Mahito Ōba in the Japanese version of Star Fox: Assault. In the English version of Star Fox 64, he is voiced by Rick May. For the English version of Star Fox: Assault, he is voiced by Grant Goodeve.

Star Fox: Assault also marked Wolf's first playable appearance. If the player manages to beat the game not allowing any of the Star Fox members to retreat on all missions, Wolf will be unlocked playable in VS mode. He has higher speed and health than all other characters, and is the only character able to pilot the Wolfen effectively.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wolf appears as a playable character. He's unlocked by skipping a door in the ruins level in the Subspace Emissary, beating Boss Battles mode with Fox or Falco, or by getting 450 vs. Matches. Interestingly, his trophy states that his rivalry with Fox actually started with Fox's Father, James.

Wolf's statement "[I] Can't Let You Do That, StarFox" has become an internet phenomenon over time. Websites such as Halolz post images of Wolf photoshopped into other images, saying things like "Can't let you do that, Red Sox." or "Can't let you sleep there, Goldilocks."

The Eyepatch that he wore in Star Fox Assault, Command, and his appearance in Super Smash Brothers Brawl heavily resembles the Scouter from Dragon Ball Z.
